Need your Help!

I’m exhibiting at Staple 2006.
And I will also exhibit at either APE or San Diego Comic Con. Which is the better venue for minicomics and showing my work, SDCC or APE?
If I exhibit in SDCC, will I be drowned out by everything else? Will people just pass me by and go straight to the “big shots”?
I plan to show my work to potential publishers. Will there be any at APE? I know at SDCC there will be. Which is better for that?
If I go to APE, I’ll have only one issue done. But if I wait to go to SDCC, I will have two issues completed.
I wish I could go to both but I can only choose one. I’ve never been to these before so if I sound ignorant or naive that’s because I am.
Thanks for your help,
—-Joseph
PS—If you have a minicomic you should submit it to the Isotope Awards:

Joseph,
San Diego is friggin’ huge, and from what I hear the table costs are quite high. A bunch of folks from ASG and A Scanner Darkly were at San Diego this year, too, and you can ask them about their experience trying to contact publishers.
Glad you got a table.

I’ve never been to San Diego myself, but it’s an all out pop-culture event. You could be drowned out, you could find success, you might have fun. There will be a LOT of publishers there to talk to, if they have the time. Some small press people have found success there thanks to the shear number of folks in attendance. I would think it would help if you are a crackerjack salesperson though (though creating great PR is useful at every show). I am not. hah.
I’ve been to APE twice and am planning on going in 2006. It’s a “main-stream” alterna fest. Mini comics are very welcome, as are hand made bunnies, and general weirdness. The majority of the alternative press publishers will be represented. Size-wise I would say it’s probably three times as large as STAPLE…so it’s very possible to get lost there too.

Hey, thanks for the advice, guys. Sandy-Eggo seems a bit intimidating for me to exhibit there at this time. I’ll definitely register for APE though. It seems like a barrel o’ monkeys. And if things go well I’ll go to Sandy as an “attendee” to check things out. (I’ll wear an absurd outfit and pass out promotional stuff about my comic.)
Also, thanks for pointing me to ASG, Gary. Wish I could meet up every Sunday. I want to move to Austin soon. Conroe is so dead. Is there anything like that in Houston, Toby?
Anyways, thanks again,
—Joseph

There’s http://www.houstoncomics.com/ I haven’t been an active participant in a while though. Shane just put on another Houston event recently, haven’t seen any pics or reports yet though.

Yeah, I didn’t go to the Houston show either but I do know that they’re already planning next year’s for sometime in November (the 18th, I think).

I need to get my APE registration in the mail soon. I’m trying to sell art and save up for the trip at the moment. I faxed off my MoCCA registration earlier in the week. So with STAPLE I think I’m set for a great triple-crown in ‘06.

I’d also reccomend the Stumptown Comix Fest in Portland, OR. I went this year and enjoyed it mightily. My sales were good, too. www.pdxcomix.com
