Uncle Staple's Con pics
Here’s about 30 of the pics I took over the weekend.
NIGHT[/b:c4505e8056]
/>
Rowan Rozanski of the CBLDF at the Austin Books pre-STAPLE! meet and greet. I musta said something funny.
/>
More pre-party folks. Great turnout.
/>
Brad Bankston, owner of Austin Books, holds forth to a rapt audience. Lea Hernandez is more interested in the comics. Great party Brad!
/>
Toby Craig uses his powers of hypnosis on Randy Lander “You WILL give me a good reviewwww…”
/>
The adorable Michelle Ancina of New Orlean’s Antigravity magazine at Mojo’s Coffeehouse.
/>
/>
Uncle Staple’s not a morning person.
/>
That’s Gary chatting with our first customers of the day. They got there before I did!
/>
Getting set up.
/>
Happy volunteers work the door and greet the patrons. That’s Jim, Charles and Debbie.
/>
Patrons! A good looking crowd.
/>
Austin Zine Librarians!
/>
More crowd – yay! They were really buying stuff too!
/>
An elk looms over the Webcomics Panel.
/>
The crowd is fascinated.
/>
The Indie Publishing panel. Jessie Garza brought his little one – she’s so cute!
/>
Flashing STAPLE! gang signs during dinner at Baby Acapulco’s after the show.
at Club DeVille[/b:c4505e8056]
/>
Nate Southard, Danny Blount of Frequency Press and yours truly.
/>
John Rubio draws while Les Weiler and Joe Riley from Goathead be evil.
/>
Me, Rowan Rozanski, Chris Moreno and his dad John Moreno. Too cool!
/>
Leo McGovern of Antigravity Magazine and Randy Lander of the Fourth Rail enjoy libations.
/>
Cute girls LOVE Uncle Staple!
/>
Me, Jenny and Floyd (volunteers) and Irene.
/>
Nate tries talking to the hand.
/>
Toby Craig and I were wearing cool shirts.
/>
Me and Zach Taylor of Gnourg.com. Zach did the awesome poster!
/>
Manton Reece, STAPLE! web-designer and t-shirt guy extraordinaire. And me.
/>
Reel Deal host Korey Coleman joins me and Joe for more gang sign flashing.
/>
Goathead be some evil muthas!

Gary Bartos, Sonambulo creator Rafael Navarro, and me.
/>
Me and Shannon Wheeler partying down with Satan’s Cheerleaders!
/>
Next day at the Hideout for Austin Sketch Group. Everyone is tired but happy.

Yeah I really like the little camera I’ve got. It’s a Kodak Easyshare CX something or other. Takes real good pics :)
I’d gotten about 60 but the rest didn’t come out as well or were sort of redundant.

a con in your town
Chris is best qualified to talk about this. So . . .
1. Talk to Chris (a.k.a. Uncle Staple).
2. If your town doesn’t already have a 24-Hour Comics Day planned for 23 April 2005, try organizing the event locally and see who comes out of the woodwork. http://www.24hourcomics.com/
3. If your town doesn’t have a sketch group or comics jam like the Austin Sketch Group, try starting one so that you can build up some momentum. http://www.austinsketchgroup.com/
Austin Books is hosting a 24-Hour Comics Day here in Austin. Austin Sketch Group meets every Sunday in central Austin.
Uncle Staple is tired from the show, but I’m sure he could pass along some advice. The DVD from the show will include a video clip of Chris talking about the work required to make Staple! happen, and a shorter version of his talk may also appear online.

Hey Chris! Well the short answer is [i:442e8d21bb]bust your ass for a year [/i:442e8d21bb]- it’s a little more complicated than that, and the devil’s in the details ya know – but that’s a good summation of what you need to be prepared for.
It also doesn’t hurt to be very lucky and get a lot of cool folks to help you out.
I’ll answer the email you sent as soon as I can.

Steel City
Chris F.
Your profile lists your location as “Steel City”. Are we talking Pittsburgh or Bethlehem, PA?
I might have an excuse to go to one or the other, so please keep me/us posted.

it’s birmingham, alabama. birmingham was once the largest producer of steel in the southern states b/c of the natural abundance of iron ore in the south. b’ham still uses the term “steel city” even though it now produces mostly smog. :D

Birmingham
Birmingham . . . hmm. Haven’t been there. Good comic scene? Lots of artists/writers? (Probably a good topic for separate thread, especially if you’re kicking off your own Staple! offshoot.)
