Stuff to do in Austin

When you’re not enjoying the Staple! festivities, there’s plenty to do in Austin:
1. Texas State Capitol. Head downtown to Congress Avenue and look north. The Capitol’s open to public and free to visit.
2. Sixth Street. Live music/bar district on Sixth Street between Congress and I-35.
3. Fourth Street / Warehouse district west of Congress. More evening entertainment, a few lovin’ ladlefuls of restaurants.
4. Jazz fans: you’re best bet is Elephant Room on Congress between 3rd and 4th on the east side. Blaze, one of my favorites, plays the night of Friday 4 March. (http://www.natespace.com/elephant/)
5. University of Texas. Big. Lots of students. North of the Capitol. Best bet’s to head up Gaudalupe (west of Congress)
6. Stevie Ray Vaughn statue. (http://www.austinwebpage.com/main.htm)
7. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema downtown. A brew-n-view, basically: order food and watch flicks. (http://www.originalalamo.com/downtown/frames.asp)
8. Always more live music, sometimes even at your grocery store.
Anyway, that’s my starter list.
Sadly, Barton Springs pool will be closed through 11 March. :(
Cruise Zilker Park, though.
I don’t think the bats are here yet, and they aren’t expected until mid-March. (http://www.batcon.org/discover/congress.html) Gotta love those bats.
Note: there’s a separate forum thread about restaurants.

the Bob Bullock Museam is pretty cool and it has an Imax.
The Harry Ransom Center on UT campus is a cool art and history museum, and it’s free.

Leslie

Make your Austin experience complete by spotting Leslie, the city’s most famous transvestite / mayoral candidate.
The Wikipedia entry will get you started:

She’s got my vote!
But I see that she’s getting less and less votes each time she runs.

The Texas Biennial opens on Thursday so there’s plenty of art to be seen around town. Also I highly recommend the current exhibit at The Art House.
