[quote:1df88887b4=”travis!!!”] mother’s is on duval, right? wait… right?
/> You are correct, sir.
There’s also an Ethiopian place on MLK with good veggie food. World Beat Cafe.
I’m not a vegetarian though I’m not a militant carnivore either. Austin, however, is the LAND OF BBQ! I beleive there’s more good BBQ in this town than anywhere else in the world.
Ruby’s on Guadalupe
Art’z on South Lamar
Green Mesquite on Barton Springs
Rudy’s here and there abouts.
County Line out on the lake
Stubb’s downtown
Poke-e-Joe’s
Salt Lick out on 360
and
Sam’s over on the [i:1df88887b4]East Side[/i:1df88887b4]
I probably missed some but those are my faves in no particular order.

I don’t remember the names of those places you took us to this past weekend Chris, but both of them were really good.
So what’s the plan with any pre-party, post-party and party-partys?
Gatherings and chow, etc.

other restaurants

We do have a good selection of vegetarian restaurants and restaurants that serve tasty vegetarian meals here in Austin. There’s a Mr. Natural no too far from the Staple! venue.
Those with a taste for Indian food should check out
The Clay Pit, 1601 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX 78701 Ph 512-322-5131
(across from the Dog & Duck Pub)
The several Kerbey Lane Cafe locations serve good, fresh food of all kinds. http://www.kerbeylanecafe.com/KERBEYMAINPAGE.htm
Kerbey Lane South at 2700 S. Lamar, 512-445-4451, will be the one closest to Staple!
For non-vegetarians:
Also close by is the best rib joint in town, Artz Rib House, 2330 S. Lamar, 512-442-8283.
http://www.artzribhouse.com/
If you’re going to be downtown and want to spend an extra buck or twenty, check out a favorite restaurant for many townies, Castle Hill Cafe, 1101 W. 5th St, 78703, 512-476-0728.

Hey Toby!
For brunch we went to [b:0dd98b935f]Red River Cafe[/b:0dd98b935f], which is actually just [i:0dd98b935f]off[/i:0dd98b935f] Red River. Great breakfasty type food – very affordable.
Dinner was at [b:0dd98b935f]Hyde Park Bar and Grill [/b:0dd98b935f]on Duval at about 42nd. Famous for the french fries but everything is really good. GREAT desserts!
All those places Gary mentioned are awesome, too!
I’d also reccomend [b:0dd98b935f]Threadgill’s[/b:0dd98b935f] – two locations, one downtown near the venue and one on North Lamar. They specialise in gut-busting home-style Southern cooking – comfort food – but also have a wide variety of vegetable dishes to chose from, most of which are vegetarian. You can get the 3 veggie or 5 veggie plate, and you get [i:0dd98b935f]free refills![/i:0dd98b935f]
Re: Parties – Brad at Austin Books has offered to host a pre-event meet and greet at his store on 51st and Lamar. This will be sometime Friday evening.
After the show I’m hoping to set something up at a club someplace, possibly with some live art! I’ll post more details as they are worked out.

I would recommend [b:21e9e65178]Habana[/b:21e9e65178]; great Cuban food at a reasonable price. The Congress building is still shut down from the fire in the fall, but they’re have a spot somewhere around Sixth.
To save the frustration of trying to find the correct phone number, its (512) 443-4252.

I wondered what happened to that place.

More good eats

Don’t miss [b:3012717ed0]Hoover’s[/b:3012717ed0] on Manor Road just east of the Interstate. And [b:3012717ed0]Amy’s Ice Cream[/b:3012717ed0]. There’s one on the drag (Guadalupe) around 33rd St. or so.
Cheers!
Ben

Restaurants closest to the Staple! show

There are several locally owned restaurants within walking distance (0.5 miles) of the Staple! show.
Going east on Barton Springs from Dawson:
1. Castleberry’s Gourmet Sammiches
http://www.castleberryscafe.com/
SE corner of Barton Springs and Dawson. Closest to the show.
Saturdays 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
2. “1-Stop” convenience store
They have an ATM and convenience store food.
One building to the east of Castleberry’s.
3. Vinny’s Italian Cafe
http://www.dailytexanonline.com/news/2004/06/09/Entertainment/Italian.Standards.With.An.Austin.Atmosphere-685006.shtml
A little further than 1-Stop. Pricier, too.
4. Sandy’s Burgers & Frozen Custard
http://www.diningoutwithrobbalon.com/review/sandys/
On Barton Springs, nearly to (just west of) 1st Street.
Going west on Barton Springs from Dawson:
1. The Green Mesquite Barbeque & More
http://www.statesman.com/dining/content/dining/reviews01/greenmesquite.html
BBQ, tacos, and chicken fried steak one manager says is better than the CFS at Threadgills. Wow, I’ll have to put that to the test.
Cheap.
2. Romeo’s
http://www.austin360.com/dining/restaurants/17045/DetailedList.jspd;COXnetJSessionID=CnULj52m4Jo6FRet16RBiEV8bFeGiMXDfJo60NLQ2Hor0GP2rPV7!-781903378?urac=n&urvf=11099065079670.45866318161315556&activity=17045
Cozy, romantic spot.
3. Austin Java
http://www.austinjava.com/
Breakfast, coffee, sandwiches, other cafe stuff. Very nice staff.
New Barton Springs location.
4. Shady Grove
http://www.theshadygrove.com/
Cool hang-out, and an Austin favorite.
5. Chuy’s
http://www.chuys.com/
Tex-Mex.
The walk from Staple! to Chuy’s would define the reasonable limit in terms of walking distance, about 0.5 – 0.6 miles.
Please help Keep Austin Weird by buying from local businesses.

Free wireless access points in Austin:

Listings include Castleberry’s, The Green Mesquite, Romeo’s, and Flipnotics (on Barton Springs west of Lamar, across from Austin Java).
The flagship Whole Foods just opened up at Fifth and Lamar, and it’s huge and quite spiffy. I’m a Central Market man myself, but the new Whole Foods is quite nice.

If you’re going be spending your time near Austin Books, then that can help decide where you’ll eat. You’ll be close to the UT campus and to the Hyde Park area, both of which sport some decent restaurants.

Feh… I’ll take Chipotle ANY day of the week…
and if you’re gonna do Amy’s Ice Cream, it’s gotta happen down on 6th and Lamar… that’s MY neck o’ the woods.
for hometown food…. hmmm…
Madre’s[/b:6ea083b28f] for breakfast tacos… yum.
Hattens (or Katz’)[/b:6ea083b28f] for awesome sammiches and stuff.
Pizza[/b:6ea083b28f] is really good. You know.. for not being a New York Pizzaria….

Mangler:
You know, I gotta say I’m always a little disappointed with Austin’s Pizza. Maybe the one in my neighborhood down in Deep South Austin has a tendency to undercook them or something, but they’re just no tastier than what I’d get anywhere else. [b:7cb83290e7]Mangia[/b:7cb83290e7], though—that’s stuff I can eat several days in a row.
I haven’t been to Manny Hatten’s yet. How does it compare to Katz’s?

Katz’s – it never closes!
Zen on Guadalupe has tasty, fresh, affordable, fast Japanese food. Teriaki bowls and such, bento boxes, soba. Highly reccomend it.
