Okay, so here we are, the start of the new Studio Blink Twice BIG thread.
We’re a UK/France based comics studio currently producing the titles Malcolm Magic and Tusk, and the on-line web story One Night in the City.
Our big, BIG release will be MOON!, a sci-fi-comedy-action-adventure-romance-spce-opera-epic the likes of which has never been seen before!
Hmm…maybe that’s a good thing!
So here it begins, the Studio numbers 3, with me on art, my brother Bob on words, and our genius Webmaster General Mark on all things web-and-games based.
New art will be going up every 2-3 days…forever!

Well, it’s Easter Sunday here in the UK, and I hope you’re all having a great time wherever you are. As it’s a holiday for me, I thought I’d post something a bit different and (hopefully!) a bit special. So here’s a pic I did of a Girl. Well, folks, ole’ Lorenzo’s off to Edinborougugh-burg in Sc-c-c-cotland to do a few day’s sketchin’, so as this is the last post for this week, I thought I’d better make it a big one. So here, at a nice size for once, is the cover art for issue 9 of Malcolm Magic, before I cropped it all down and laid on the logo and stuff. Yikes! A little more One Night in the City today I think…

So, the MOON! wheels roll on, and I thought you guys may like to see a few of the smudgey character designs I’ve been sketching out. Today’s is not a primary character, more a broad character feel experiment. Having not had to draw more than a couple of female characters in Malcolm during the entire run so far, it’s looking like MOON!’s gonna be awash with "da ladies", as my man Strongbad might say. So, I’d better get scribbling!

So, it’s Friday, and as such I’m feeling more than a little excited about a nice long weekend. However, a bank holiday here in the UK means I won’t be posting on Monday. Fear not though, friends, as I’ll instead be treating you all to TWO postings today! Here’s the first, a page from Malcolm Magic issue 9. What? No words?! I hear you guys, and don’t worry, you’ll be getting a nice slab of my brother’s "unique" dialogue with a 4-page MM09 sequence reeeeeal soon! Hoho! Well, it’s already Friday here in the UK, and as I sit and watch the sun rise at my window here in the West Wing of Blink Towers, the smell of fresh bakery is wafting up to me, which can only mean one thing; ole Skitty Peebles is here with the fresh bread and cakes delivery for the big ball this weekend. Right! I’m off to nab a couple of Charlie Choc’s Famous Twisted Muffins, before Chef puts them away in the larder!

So Monday’s here, and it’s a short one, forum-wise for us this week, as I’ll only be posting today and tomorrow, and then I’m off into con prep mode, so all internet-based comms have to cease (I’d never get ANYTHING done!). So, first up, here’s a little page from the black and white storyline in Malcolm Magic issue 9. Reggy, Chester and Fikov have been found guilty of detroying half the ‘Dale when they crashed through the interdimentional wall from Fuzzton and have been sentanced to work as a touring comedy troupe. Yep. It’s THAT kind of comic! Hoho! Let’s see how they get on it their big performance at Pratfall’s Theatre Bowl…...

So, this is my last post until next Tuesday due to prep for [url=www.comicexpo.net]THE CON[/url], and to make up for this unforgivable lack of The Blink in your lives, we wanted to give you something a bit special to keep you going through the long, lonely nights. It was an organisational nightmare get every body’s agents to agree, and the seating plan changed some 132 times to avoid people fighting/eating the person sitting next to them, but on Sunday we got the whole gang down to the studio and got the shot we were after. So here it is guys…The Class of 2006, the entire Malcolm Magic cast from the first 10 issues, enyoy…
Oh, and that big green and brown guy was a NIGHTMARE! He’d only drink “Special Weserve” Nodsuf Mount BOOM bottled water, and was endlessly complaining about legroom. sigh there really is no pleasing some monsters…

So, I’m all settled back from the Big Bristol Con, and boy did we have a good time!!! Lots of very exciting new developments in and around the Blink camp, but not alot I can talk about here yet!! So, in the meantime, thanks to all the folks who came along, particularly those who check out our stuff on the forums and made it down for the weekend, very, very cool! I’ll let you all know when the con pics are up, but in the meantime, here’s some more MOON! fun!
Oh, and it’s another short week this week (I know, I know, part timer, right?) so tomorrow I’ll have a special treat for you folks as I’m off to the Blink chalet in Morzine, France for the weekend! Wheee!

So, I just got back from an AWESOME time out in Morzine, chilling with my bro, the man behind the creation and writing of all our stories, Robin, or Bob, or whatever you wanna call him. ANYWAYS, we were up in a beautiful chalet a thousand or so feet up, and I must say, all that fresh air’s envigorated me no end, so expect an even greater output from the Blink in the coming months! Okay, so time fore more of that nutsy MOON! concept stuff, with a fairly recent environmental sketch. My ethos for life is that you never know when you’re gonna get caught with some time on your hands, so always keep some pencils and paper close at hand! With that in mind, I did this a few weeks ago on a moving train between Bristol and London, yikes!
Oh, and remember that surfboard design? Well I’ve got an update on that coming for you reeeeeal soon!

SKREEEEEEETCH!!! Ah! Here we are, I’ve just put the Amazon away after a weekend at a very coolio Jazz Festival out in the beautiful town of Marlborough, where amusingly in the middle of a que of people heading in to a big marquee I met a Malcolm fan!! How nuts is that? These comics, I tell you, they’re even infiltrating the JAZZ of all things! Whoip!
Anyways, on Friday I promised you guys an update on that surfboard design, and here it is! Not the actual board itself, but a re-working of the image made from the original photo. Hope you guys likey, more on this soon!

For those of you who regularly check in on this thread, you’ll remember the Vunder Vooman mini-tutorial I posted a few weeks back (have a look through folks, you’ll find it!). Well, I figured that I’d try to do a similar thing whenever I produce an image which has some new or unusual technique involved in it’s production, or which has some interesting stages within the build-up of the pic. As such, here’s a VERY mini break-down of how I went from low-res photo to high-definition photoshop illustration on that ole’ surfboard design…!

Well, by Broski Bob’s back after having been living the snowy life up in a ‘boarding chalet in Morzine for five months, and then living the wind-surfey life in Hungary for a month, but the Blink is finally back together! Friday! Glorious (sweaty!) Friday! Well, if your city/town/village/hamlet/cardboard box is anything like dear ole’ Bristol, then I should think you’re having rather a hot time of it at the moment! Happy Monday morning, peoples! Well, yesterday was a pretty momentous occasion for the ole’ Blink, as Robin finished the last page of the script for the final issue of the adventure. That’s right, peeps, it’s over, and I gotta say, the ending is a gol’darned BEAUTY!! It’s an amazing achievement for anyone to start writing a comic book, but finishing it is more often than not even harder, and as usual, my Broski’s done it with [i:8e918a93d8]GUSTO[/i:8e918a93d8]! Once again he’s shown me why his are the only stories I’d want to illustrate – they’re just so much FUN! So, those of you getting excited about MOON! will be pleased to hear that Bobber’s attentions are now fully turned on the scripts for the first 6-issue season, and you just [i:8e918a93d8]know[/i:8e918a93d8] we’ll be dishing out some teasers and snippets right here in the Blink thread! Stay tuned!
In the meantime, I gotta get back to scribbling Malcolm 11, so here’s another one of those watercolour concept sketches to keep you going! More tomorrow, folks!

So, as promised last week, here’s a little something rare…
It’s approaching CON time here again in the UK, and the Blink Circus will be rolling into the url=http://www.londonexpo.com/index.shtmlb:b566eca253LONDON MCM EXPO/u:b566eca253/color:b566eca253 (it’s a link, folks!) on the weekend of October 28th-29th. We’ll post up loads more info as it gets closer, but right now I’m starting work on the VERY exclusive FREE sketchbook we’ll be producing for the show. We do a new one of these mini (8-12 page) sketchbooks for every con we attend, which are free (with every £10 spent) at the stall. Limited to either 25 or 50 numbered signed editions, there have been two Malcolm SBs, four MOON! SBs and a One Night in the City SB, which was produced for the London Web and Mini Comic Thing we did in March. Obviously, unless you’ve managed to get a hold of one of these rare little gems, you’ll not have seen inside ‘em, so I thought today I’d give you a little peek in the ONITC one, here being a few pages from it.
Note in particular the first panel, which was produced (though not with the final colours) BEFORE last Christmas, and probably won’t feature in the strip until AFTER this Christmas!! And they say I can’t plan ahead…!

So, here are a few panels from Malcolm Magic issue 11, currently in production. As the plan for MOON! entails us producing most of the first season before launching issue 1, we’re staggering the release of the last two Malcolm issues, and the final trade between now and early 2007. Fear not though, folks, as you can see here, issue 11 is gonna be a DOOZEY..er..I hope!
Note too that this is the first time I’ve drawn Tonka where he looks a bit "Naked". Hoho!

Well, it’s reeeeal early here in England, and thunder and lightning are coming down outside, but here in the Blink offices I got my steaming cup of "Mister Chokkins’ Ko-Ko" a couple of "Charlie-choc-sugar-coated-chok-drops" and a bar of..er..Chocolate, so I’m doing just fine! Here, for those MOON! fans out there (you are out there, aren’t you?) is a little meteor landing sketch I did on a train a while back…! More new images up in here before you know it!

Never let it be said that I don’t try my best to keep this thread interesting! Following the cool feedback we got about that surfboard thing a while back, I’m gonna try to do show more of the "Away from the comic page" type things I get up to. Let’s start with a T-Shirt! Every now and then I get frustrated by the lack of cool comic-art based T’s and stuff out there in the shops, so I make a few of my own. Here’s the design for one I did a few weeks back…

Well, the MOON! wheels roll on, and I’ve moved from the free-form style sketch work you’ve seen up until now to more focused designs aimed specifically at characters/environments/vehicles/machines & ships for season 1. Although it’ll take a while for this to filter through to this thread, I thought I’d post up a little head-shot which should give you an idea of the style/finish of the new stuff. Can’t tell you much about this fellah, as he’s yet to be green lit by my bro as a character for the series, but I hope you enjoy checking this out anyways!

So, I return!! Well, you know what they say, folks, the best laid plans of mice and monkeys and all that, needless to say, this is my 100th images posting here in the ole’ Blink thread (well, technically 100th and 101st), and as such, I had hoped to bring you guys something rather special to celebrate. Thus, I spent a few late nights putting together a cheeky little m-m-movie style imovie trailer for MOON! I had it all ready this weekend, but, frankly, I’ve not been satisfied with the quality of the web-hosting I had planned for the piece, so have had to put it’s release on hold for now. Sorry! Hey Chris! Man, we’d love to, at the moment we’re planning on San Diago, and are gonna see what other shows we can afford to do. It’s a little expensive coming over to you guys to say the least!! We are looking into it, though, and if we can’t make the 2007 show, we’ll be at STAPLE! ‘08 for sure! It’s a very cool looking show, sir!
So, here’s a detail from the Indie Spinner Rack poster. I’m posting this at bigger-than-big size, as I wanted to show the benefits of using pencil lines as opposed to inked lines in the pages of MOON! My inking, having always been a bit shaky, has never blown up very well. That, and the fact that it is essentially pixelated more by the cleaning process than pencils. So, I though I’d show you this detail of the Indie spinner pic, much larger (in terms of screen size) than the original artwork. I think it blows up pretty good! Plus, it may even be big enough that those of you who are inclined to put this stuff up on your bedroom/studio/office/toilet walls can get a good A4 print off it. Or use it as a wallpaper right on your desktop! Lovely!

Well, here we are then, the weekend calls, and I’m off to see my bro, Bob, and our webmaster general Marky this weekend!! With all the Blink boys together for a few days you just KNOW the ideas are gonna fly, so I’m looking forward to diving into that ole’ Blink melting pot! In the meantime, I wanted to post another pencils panel from MM11. This shot exemplifies just why I consider Bob’s writing to be absolutely perfect! When I read a script that describes a single panel with an 11-stage sequence of Reggy, Chester and Fikov fighting with Sebastian the Bat for Dang’s Whirdly Staff whilst on the back of Kenneth, the other Bat, flying precariously over the rooftops of Happy Hippy Dale, I just think: THIS is what comics are about! Here’s to you bro! You’re a genius, keep this mad stuff coming, there’s nothing I’d rather draw!

Now then, after the confusing nature of Friday’s piece, here’s one that’s a little more straight forward, albeit with some elements of the image missing! Here’s the Gullivans getting a bit of a shock whilst in the middle of a nice little sit-down meal! Meow! Sound effects and some vector-based action lines will eventually go into the final inks to make this pic complete, but for now, I hope you enjoy the pencils!

Okay, folks, so I’ve been meaning to do another lil’ tutorial for a while now, and I’ve actually got several backed up, including one on painting rain, and another on creating complex interior environments, but today we’re gonna start with something a little more basic. For those of you who find this a bit boring I apologise, but we’ve had LOADS of questions to the site about our process for creating a normal B&W page recently, so I thought I’d start with that. Well here we are folks, Monday morn! I promised you something fun for today, and I hope I deliver. We’ve never produced a print or poster of any kind before (because, well, it’s all about the comics, baby!), so when Bob and I decided it was time we did, the task was set upon with [i:a4e09038ef]Gusto[/i:a4e09038ef]! We wanted it to be a MOON! image, but rather than just a standard splash-style pic, I wanted to produce something which would show what the INTERIOR art will be like in MOON! Ah! Happy Friday! So, here’s one which is so hot off the press you can still smell the pub it was drawn in!! Hoho! Had a lil’ sketch session with a few of the guys from Concept Art who reside here in Bristol (hey J-man! whassup, B!) on Wednesday eve. Did a couple of vehicle designs for the tippity-top secret MOON! project I mentioned a while back, but also knocked out this lil’ bad-boy, and I thought you guys might like to see. I’ve got hundreds of these type MOON! environs backed up, but am finding them a bit of a time drag to digitally clean, so recently moved from sketching in pencil to sketching with a humble biro, and I love it!! The softness of pencil, the cleanliness of ink, it meant this pic required almost no cleaning, just scanned it in straight from the layup page! Clearly the way ahead, methinks…

It’s also a team Blog, meaning that you’ll get Bob popping in from time to time to post up news on the scripting and general creation of all our adventures, and Marky will be in there too to let you know of any web-based wonders on the way. So, today’s a big day in the church of Blink, as our founding member, mister Robin Etherington (aka broski) has a big ole Birthday!!!! As many of you will know, by bro creates, writes and letters every single one of our adventures, and is the giant BRAIN behind all things Blink. Getting to work with my brother on these insanely fun projects is an absolute dream come true, and is the kind of thing we naively would chat about in tree houses, on our bikes, and in rooms strewn with copies of The Beano and episodes of Charlie’s War as kids. Little did we know back then the world’s a lot more complicated than it seems when you’re seven, and sticking to our guns on producing the kind of comics we really care about has meant a great deal or perseverance and dedication. With Bob at the wheel though, it’s always an absolute delight and sitting down at the drawing board each day here in Blink Towers with a new page of script is always exciting: wondering where he’ll whisk my imagination and my pencils off to this time. So happy B-day, Bo-bo, can’t wait until the Blink Team meets up tomorrow for a weekend of con-based Birthday shenanigans! Cheers!

Well, we just had a really rather awesome time at the Birmingham con, but more of that later…
After 3 years, 300 pages of script, 220 pages of art, tons of covers, specials, sketchbooks and suchlike, it’s time for Malcolm Magic to finally hang up his ears.
Without the dedication, enthusiasm and downright genius of my partner in command and bro Robin, who created this entire adventure from scratch and then penned each issue in a way which a dumba$$ like me could understand ("Malcolm goes on the left of the panel…the LEFT. No, your OTHER left.." etc) none of this would EVER have happened. So thank you bro, for showing me that a little spark can start a VERY large engine. In fact, you better get up here on the Bridge, and bring Marky, ‘cos MOON! ain’t gonna drive itself you know…

So, the Birmingham show was an absolute blast, as those of you who made it will testify. For a first show in a new city the attendance was great, and the diversity and numbers of exhibitors represented a fantastic cross-section of the UK and Euro indie and mainstream scene. As I was the only "pure" Blink team member there (my older bro Will was stepping into the shoes of Bob and Mark for the weekend) I couldn’t do as much sketching as normal, but here’s a few of my faves from the weekend…

So, as we head into 2007 you’ll notice a few changes here in the ole’ Blink Thread. Due to several international MOON! releases we’ve got coming up in the next 6 months or so, there’s alot of stuff in production on the Blink drawing board I can’t show you at the moment. Due to that, there may be a slight lull in the frequency of posts here in the thread, but I’ll do my best to throw at least one or two pieces your way each week. Oh, and of course, work on MOON! season 1 continues too, here’s a concept for one of MOON!’s engine rooms. This design was ultimately discarded as it didn’t really hit any of the marks I had in my head for this environment, but I thought you guys may like to see it anyway.

So, three newies today, all from different stages of production. First up is an unfinished design I did for a member of the MOON! crew’s quarters. Then there’s a scribbly-scribbly "straight on the page" design for a WALKABOT, along with some preparatory thumbnails, and the script description Robin gave me. As you can see, I veered off topic somewhat, and it ended up looking fairly different to what he had in mind, I think! Hoho! Finally, another bit of plantlife design for a planet in issue 2 of MOON!

Well now, I had an AWESOME time at the Exeter Expo this weekend just gone. Thanks to all youse kool kats who came down and spent a chilled Sunday chatting comics, pencils, and MOON! The Blink will certainly be there again next year, so I hope to see all you Exeter kids again then! Cheers!
The coming of the Exeter show commences the early show season here in the UK, with three more cons on the way over the next few months. The first of these is the url=http://ukwebcomixthing.co.uk/UK Web and Mini Comix Thing/color:afd3afad94 on Saturday 17th March. The Blink are strong supporters of this one-dayer for all things Web and Indie, and we were lucky enough to be asked to produce the official Poster/anthology cover for this year’s show. As with last year we have also produced 4-pages of exclusive MOON! Gung-Ho goodness for the anthology itself, where we will be joined by pages from many of the great exhibitors from the show. Below is the official poster, along with some snap-shots of last year’s "rarer than rocking horse poo" anthology, to give you an idea of the kinda’ thing you can expect to see. More on this show soon, as we have a rather exciting special release there for fans of One Night in the City amongst other things…

Ho-kay, folkses! So, as promised, I can now announce that at the UK Web and Mini Comix Thing this coming Saturday (17th) we’ll be launching a very special little One Night in the City book. Collecting the first 11 paintings, as well as previously unseen pencil panels and other such goodies, we’re producing just 100 numbered and signed copies of this little bad-boy. The first 30 will be on sale at the Thing, with the rest being sold at the Bristol and London shows in May. I’ll show you one of ‘em in a few days right here in this ole’ thread! Exciting, huh?
Today’s posts continue the theme set out last week of sketch and design work for our story for the Indie Spinner Anthology. Although the anthology is to be all B&W, I’m producing a lot of these designs in colour, since they involve various key characters from the MOON! first season. SOULSTA in particular is very important in the series. Note too, my obvious and unashamed tribute to the great great Hampson in the familiar designs of Pop and Timbr. Expect lots more nods to the awesome Dan Dare in future posts! These are preliminary designs, and have yet to be fully approved by Robin, but still, here they are…
Oh, and finally, I was a little bored waiting for a friend in a bar recently, so I grabbed a napkin, asked the waitress for a biro, and did a little scribbling. rooting through my pockets the other day I found said doodle, and thought I’d scan it in a do a quick colour job in Photoshop, hope you dig!

If you wanna complete your collection, or just pic up a few copies of issue one to sell on Ebay for a massive profit in twenty years’ time, then be sure to come see us at the big Bristol and London shows in May (more details of them soon).
