"STAPLE! was phenomenal,
a first year show that acted like a precocious mutant baby genius."
Rafael Navarro Quick QuestionsPhil Hester: Why aren't you rich yet? Sonambulo is better than about 90% of the stuff they make into movies and TV shows. Rafael Navarro: Aww, thanks Phil, you really make a guy feel loved, man...! I don't know. It's not out of trying. Probably the same reason why Uncle Slam or even better, Nails still waits to be unleashed as well...sigh... STAPLE!: What ways do you find your life influences your work? Rafael Navarro: Anything from life usually influences my work, actually! Write and draw from what you know has always been a great policy...it makes your stories more truthful, and honest....for fiction at least! STAPLE!: To what extent do you use digital tools in your art? Rafael Navarro:Mostly during the prepress stage. Lettering, coloring, file convertion. As for the actual art execution, I'm pretty much old school when it all comes down to it. STAPLE!: What new artists or works (whether in comics or otherwise) excite you? Rafael Navarro:Chris Moreno is the shizzle... He's the cream in my coffee lately. His layouts are just tasty, and his linework just shows the love he has for the work... An inspiration. STAPLE!: Have you got a good convention or show story you can tell us? Rafael Navarro:Too many, but recently, I ran into an old school mate from 4th grade, and of all places, a comic convention! What were the odds to that? |
About Rafael NavarroSTAPLE! has extended invites to a variety of creators to answer a series of quick questions about working in comics, and we’ll be updating these questions as the responses come in, so check back often! The questions are four standard questions asked to each participant, and then a fifth question posed to the creator by the previous interviewee. Our latest interviewee is Rafael Navarro, creator of pulp gem Sonambulo, about a hard-boiled detective in a wrestling mask and the strange cases he finds himself involved in. Rafael was a guest at the inaugural STAPLE!, and will return to STAPLE! in 2006! Our first question for Rafael comes from our previous interviewee, Phil Hester. |
