STAPLE! The Independent Media Expo 2006

Hope Larson Quick Questions

STAPLE!: What was your first work in comics?

HOPE: I briefly drew a comic called I Was There and Just Returned on Girlamatic.com. It was loosely based on Egyptian folk tales, but I didn't know what I was doing and quit pretty fast.

STAPLE!: In what ways does your life influence your art?

HOPE: Most things that interest me eventually end up in my comics.

STAPLE!: To what extent do you use digital tools in your art?

HOPE: I started out drawing everything on the computer, but now that I work with brush and ink I try to make any digital additions as invisible as possible. I mainly use Photoshop for touchup, to fill blacks and to add lettering if I'm not doing it by hand.

STAPLE!: What new artists or works (whether in comics or otherwise) excite you?

HOPE: I love Lucy Knisley's comics, which are hilarious and semi-autobiographical (http://www.stoppayingattention.com/). And I'm obviously crazy about Rebecca Kraatz's strip House of Sugar (http://www.rebeccakraatz.com/)! I hope she draws a longer story one day, because I'm sure it would be incredible.

STAPLE!: Have you got a good convention or show story you can tell us?

HOPE: Once I got an amazing piece of fan art from a 7-year-old girl. It detailed a dozen of her imaginary friends and was inspired by Salamander Dream, which pretty much melted my heart.
